I love Easter and all that it represents: re-birth, hope, grace, Spring and light. For some reason though, it feels like it snuck up on me this year! Maybe it’s because Easter Sunday is in March this year rather than April which it’s typically been. Also, my kids started their Spring Breaks yesterday which makes our days all that more full. (Funny how being OFF from school means that my days are busier, now that they’re older and more high-maintenance!) Also, with my sister and Mom being out of the country, I didn’t have a big Easter dinner on my radar. Nevertheless, we will be honoring the holiday with certain simple but genuine activities:
Hot Cross Buns. My mom used to make these every Easter. I’ve never made them for my crew, and the one year I bought some from the bakery, they were less than impressed (“What are THESE?” “I don’t LIKE raisins”) But guess what? WE are going to be baking some today, folks. Get with the program.
Easter Sunday Service. There’s a joke in the Black community that there are certain people that are “CME Christians” meaning that they only go to church on Christmas, Mother’s Day and Easter. I’m happy to say that’s not our situation, but I definitely make a point to attend church on Easter. So that’s where we’ll be Sunday morning! And I may even have a fly Easter bonnet to complement the day.
Easter Brunch. Our cousins and a family friend or two will come over and we’re going to have an Easy Easter Brunch, post-church. It’s going to be a hybrid of homemade goodies and semi-homemade items as well. The Pimiento Cheese Dip, I’ll be picking up from our fave Amish market (it’s SO good); the Maple-Glazed ham will be courtesy of Honeybaked Ham; and of course, the gelato will be thanks to Talenti (which I am currently obsessed with). I’ll be making the Trini Macaroni Pie, the Cherry Handpies (filling by Trader Joe’s), the salad and the Honey-Glazed Carrots, and pawning off the Deviled Eggs project onto one of my guests. I’m sure that it will be an easy, breezy afternoon with the NCAA March Madness playing in the background and a backyard egg hunt for the kiddos.
Happy Easter, Friends (if you celebrate). Spring is on the way!
