Eating My Way Around Asheville, NC

{Apologies in advance for the crappy cell phone camera pics. I’m working on that.}

It all started with Kelby suggesting that we sign up for the Downtown Food Tour. Who was I to say no?

In true Fergie fashion, I was late to the tour because I arrived at the Baltimore Airport exactly 4 minutes after the cutoff for baggage check, so I had to catch the next flight. Lucky for me, the owner of the food tour company, Chris, went above and beyond to stay in touch with me throughout my travels and to make sure that I met up with the group as soon as I touched down.  I ended up only missing the first stop! I jumped in just as the group was hitting The Chocolate Fetish.  What a delicious introduction to Asheville. The Salted Caramel Truffle was major (as VB would say).

The head chocolatier giving us the inside scoop

Next up was a trip to Northern Italy at Vincenzo’s Ristorante & Bistro.  The owner was so knowledgeable in the origins of the cuisine and even the history of the building the restaurant was in.  We tasted a pork ragu (de.li.cious.) along with an Italian wine. After a morning of travel drama, the day was definitely shaping up.

Our next stop was to Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria for…what else? Pizza and beer, baby.  Apparently Asheville is a pretty big brewery city. We munched on fresh hummus and pesto pizza while the brewmaster fielded questions from the beer aficionados in the group. I.e. not me. Although, I must say, for someone who can count the number of times she has had beer on one hand, the beer they served us was pretty darn good. It was a local brew and very light. Wouldn’t it be great if I could remember the name? Yeah, no dice.

Did I mention that this was a walking tour? Such a treat. Downtown Asheville is positively charming and eclectic and there is no shortage of unique boutiques and fun eateries to check out.  Just one example was the next place on our tour: The Gourmet Chip Company.  I loved the concept! Chips are my weakness (alongside gummy candy) and the idea to top different varieties of chips with gourmet toppings was right up my alley.  It was a pleasure to hear the owner of the company tell the story of how she brought the idea to fruition.

The creative genius behind the chips

Heaven in a paper cone. Did I mention that she even serves some with chocolate-coated bacon? #boss

Last but not least, we wrapped up our 2 1/2 hour eating extravaganza with a stop at The Spice & Tea Exchange of Asheville.  This was definitely bliss for a foodie like me.  Spices and gourmet salts galore! This pic of just one corner of the store says it all:

I went a little nuts buying salts and such, but I was in my element.  I copped a Black Truffle Sea Salt that I just can’t wait to try with mashed potatoes.

By the time I got back to the hotel to meet up with my buddies, I felt like I had become intimately involved with the Asheville food scene.  Even though, it was only the beginning…

Check out my Yelp profile for reviews on the places that I had the pleasure of dining at while in town. Asheville ain’t no joke!

Eat, Relax, Repeat: Our Romantic Weekend Getaway

A couple of weekends ago, Hubby and I had the luxury of stealing away for an overnight getaway in Washington, VA.  Now, Washington, VA (where exactly is that anyway) isn’t Venice or Crete, but it felt like it was to us! As parents of three young children and 1,000 miles away from grandparents, we rarely get time to ourselves, unless it’s after 9pm when we’re watching reality TV together. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve gone away together sans offspring:

1. Essence Music Festival in New Orleans in July 2008 for my 30th birthday
2. Scottsdale in 2009
3. Los Angeles for a wedding July 2010
4. Washington, VA in May 2011!

This may not seem like a big deal to some, but Hubby and I are travelers at heart and so, for us, 4 trips alone together in 8 years is criminal.  When our nanny insisted that we take an overnight trip and (because she witnessed our lack of alone time in her 4 years with us), and offered to watch the kids as a Valentine’s Day gift to us in February 2010, we thanked her and…of course never made plans. Her last day with us was looming and she cornered us and made us confirm a date. So we did. And so I started thinking about local B&Bs that would could stay at. On a whim, I checked the reservation availability at The Inn at Little Washington and they had an opening! Just one. On just one of the days that weekend. I reserved it and we were on our way!

It was a fabulous time.  Foster Harris House, the B&B we stayed at, was fantastic: gorgeous rooms, friendly owners and guests, and THE FOOD was amazing.  But, naturally the highlight was dinner at this world-renowned restaurant. The foodie in me could hardly contain herself and I wasn’t disappointed! While overlooking the garden and seated in a loveseat for the entire meal, I feasted on Carpaccio of Herb Crusted Baby Lamb with Caesar Salad Ice Cream (yep, you read that right – and it was delicious); Pecan-Crusted Soft Shell Crab Tempura Riding a Watermelon Raft with Italian Mustard Fruit and Marinated Cabbage Slaw; Pan Roasted Maine Lobster with Baby Bok Choy, Grapefruit and Citrus Butter Suace; and Seven Deadly Sins for Dessert. It was crazy. Did I mention that the menus were personalized with our names? And the chef kept sending out “gifts” for us to try.  We were beyond stuffed and borderline saucy (thanks to the brilliant sommelier) by the end of the 3-hour meal. Heaven! They had the nerve to send us home with a box of sweet treats. And, I even got to visit the “most beautiful kitchen in the world.”

Post-meal: notice the sleepy eyes

The next day we managed to eat the delicious breakfast prepared by our hosts and checked out a few local boutiques before our leisurely drive home through the Blue Ridge mountains and the Shenandoah Valley.  It was totally indulgent and totally relaxing and we totally got to savor each other’s company. I’m smiling just thinking about it.

Cars 2: Screening Tix Giveaway!

They’re baaack! The hilarious and lovable stars of the Cars movie are back in Cars 2 and I think that Hubby may be even more excited than my kids to see it.  I can see why – the first Cars movie was a great; enjoyable for adults and kids alike.  Disney just has a knack for making you connect with the characters on-screen, and gives them real personality and emotion, whether they’re a teacup or a hunk of metal with an engine.  And of course, there’s always lots of action and, in this case, CARS which will make any little kid (boys especially, I’m sure) jump out of their seat.  L’il Buddy will be beside himself watching this movie. No doubt about it.

I’m giving away passes to 3 winners to screen Cars 2 in Washington, D.C. this Saturday.  Each winner will receive 2 tickets to view the movie.  All you have to do to enter to win is to leave me a comment telling me who your favorite Cars character is and why. I’ll be announcing the winners tomorrow so you can make your weekend plans!

Here’s a synopsis of the movie:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car.  But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.  Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer).  Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.  The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Alright – let’s Git-R-Done!

On the Road Again! Destination: #TypeACon

I’m headed to Asheville, NC tomorrow for Type A Parent!  I’ve never been to Asheville before, and it’s my first time attending this conference, so I’m excited.  Out of all the blogging conferences out there (and there are a bajillion), Type A Parent is the one I’ve heard been compared to Blogalicious the most.  Why? I’ve heard that the laid-back feel, supportive environment, candid conversations and opportunities to engage with brands are all qualities that the two conferences share.  Needless to say, I’m looking forward to it.  I’ll also be speaking alongside Linda Sellers and Roxana Soto on Friday on the topic of Profitable Blogging Without Selling Your Soul.  Here’s the session description:

The more the blogosphere grows, the more important it is to find your voice and excel with it. Most bloggers start with good intentions, but get easily sidetracked by reviews, freebies and PR pitches. This session will address how to be able to court brands and publicists without losing your niche topic.

I’ll be sharing some Brand Ambassador Best Practices that I’ve learned and implemented over the years working with a slew of brands on all sorts of campaigns. Should be interesting!

Of course, on the home front, it’s never an ideal time to travel – this week is L’il Buddy’s first week at daycare (EVER), the girls’ first week of summer camp AND our first week without the nanny in 4 years. So, needless to say I am a bit apprehensive about jetting off amidst our logistical circus. That said, I think it will be good for me to step away for a little while seeing as how I am SO stressed about it all. Today, by the time I dropped the kids off and commuted into the office, it was almost 11am. That is so not gonna work!  I’m thinking that a little blog conference love will help ease my state of anxiety some.  Not to mention the Asheville Food Tour that I’ll be taking tomorrow – woo hoo!

I’m sure Hubby will be pulling his hair out after 3 days of handling camp/daycare drop-offs, pick-ups, unpacking and re-packing backpacks, making lunches and dinner/bath time duties, so I’d better come back home refreshed and ready to jump back in the game.

Now…what to pack?

Monie In the Middle

What happens when a couple that you are friends with separates or gets a divorce? It’s such a dicey subject, but it’s happening to us more and more frequently these days.  Hubby and I have tried to stay neutral, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult.  Someone who is a former divorcé advised to “pick sides.” Do we really have to? That sucks! And whose side to we pick? The 1/2 of the couple that we knew first? The one that we think is “right”? Will one be upset at us for maintaining a friendship with the other? What about for staying Facebook friends with the other?

We’ve officially entered into the Grownup Phase of Playground Politics. I’m pretty sure that this makes us old.

As does me remembering this video.

Our NOT Bummer Summer!

A couple of weeks ago, I took my kids and a friend of Chatterbox’s to go and screen Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.  We weren’t familiar with the Judy Moody series, but after seeing the movie, we will be sure to check out the books.  Chatterbox is at the age where she is interested in chapter books with central characters that are her around her age; Judy Moody has that “sass” that Chatterbox likes. The movie was great fun and even L’il Buddy sat through the entire thing.  It was different in that there were animated doodles that appeared on-screen, and I found the film to be refreshingly calm. Does that make sense? There wasn’t a rushed plot or too much loud screaming/music/chaos.  Just like summer is supposed to be…The kids loved it and were thrilled to take home free posters, books and of course Judy Moody t-shirts.

Just this week, a mom in my mom’s group announced that she had started a NOT Bummer Summer activity group for her pre-teen girls.  There seems to be such a focus on small children when it comes to summer camps and activities and she wanted to give her older girls a fun summer.  Their first outing is, of course, a trip to see the movie.  I was floored for a second to think that Chatterbox will be considered a pre-teen next year at 8 years old (holy crap).  Anyway, today was her last day of school and I announced in the car that tomorrow officially marks the start of Our NOT Bummer Summer!!

In addition to them starting at camp next week – which they ADORE – we’ll be doing a lot of the activities that I drummed up after participating in that workshop, and of course sprinkling in a few summer trips throughout.  Hubby and I will also be finally getting bikes, so I’m looking forward to family bike rides all over the city.

No matter how old I get, summertime is always a magical time to me and I can’t wait to become a kid all over again this summer with my kids. Poop Picnic excluded.

ISO: Fairy Godmother, Genie in a Lantern, Mirror on the Wall…or SOMEthing

I’ve been counting the days until June 17 for months. And it’s almost here. The end of my life as I know it.

Ok, I’m known to be a bit dramatic.

But seriously…Friday is our nanny’s last day.  She’s been with us for 4 delightful years and is moving to another state to start a life with her brand new husband.  I wish her all the best and am genuinely thrilled for her and her daughter; but I am terrified for ME.

She’s been more than a caregiver for my kids – she’s become an integral part of our household and has been sort of an angel of mine.  Over the years, I’ve written to no end about the Mommy Guilt that I’ve felt for working full-time an hour away from home, and not being able to stay at home with my kids in their earliest years.  Our nanny is a big part of what has kept me sane.  It’s amazing to be able to leave the house everyday and not worry a lick about whether my kids are being taken care of.  She loves my kids like her own and they love her.

But that’s not all. She helps me keep it all together – picking up milk from the grocery store, dropping off forms to the pediatrician’s office, sorting through the kids outgrown clothes –  I could go on.  SHE IS THE BEST.  We’ve decided not to replace her – not only because what we had to go through to find her was a nightmare, but because L’il Buddy is ready for pre-school and Giggles will be entering Kindergarten at Chatterbox’s school in the fall. So the kids are all set. But what about me?

My Modern-Day Fairytale, it seems, has come to an end.  Isn’t there a toad that I can kiss or something????

Farewell, Cambria Cove

I discovered Cambria Cove about 2 years ago and have been madly in love with the store ever since.  They offer such unique and pretty items that fed my design crush on all things beautiful + functional.  When attending Altitude Summit in 2010, I felt like I had won the lottery when each conference attendee went home with a (gorgeous) gift box from the company, filled with spectacular goodies AND a gift certificate towards the online boutique.  I decided to treat myself to a new laptop case for my then-brand new MacBook Pro:

Patent Laptop Sleeve by gogvoyage

I loved it then, and I love it now. It’s a little piece of luxury that goes with me when I travel.  Since then, I have been relishing the time I spend leafing through the Cambria Cove catalogues and daydreaming about purchasing the matching rolling tote.  At almost $300, it was out of my budget…until yesterday!

Patent Rolling Tote by gogovoyage

Over the weekend, hubby and I went on a quick overnight jaunt to Washington, VA (more on that in another post) and we happened across an adorable stylish home accents store, where I saw – in living color – the Le Cadeaux outdoor dinner entertaining pieces that I had been coveting from the Cambria Cove catalog for weeks:

We bought them (lots of them). YAY. But when we got back home, I decided to venture to the Cambria Cove site to see how we fared with pricing for the items.  I was shocked and saddened to see this message:

And then I was elated. Because…my rolling tote was on super sale! I copped it in the wee hours of the night last night and thank goodness I did, because they are sold out of them today! I got that bad boy for $86. A far cry from $300. Hooray for clearance sales.

But not a good look overall because my beloved Cambria Cove will be no longer.  I’m going to have to find a replacement boutique for my design fix.  Any suggestions?

Creating My Ideal Family Life

Today I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon attending the “Create Your Ideal Family Life” Workshop hosted by Patricia Fuentes Burns with Good + Happy Day Studio.  I initially learned of the workshop through a fellow DC Mom blogger and was intrigued by the workshop description:

Think of it as a mini retreat to help you get even better at the world’s most important job.
Gather your thoughts, get clear about your intentions and get creative about your action plans.
In this 3.5 hour workshop you will identify the elements of your ideal family life and work with
tools both inspiring and practical to help you achieve your vision. Through exercises, group discussions, journal writing and visualization sessions, we will address ways to…

…align your use of time with your priorities for your family
…identify and support your family values
…meet your own needs so you can be an inspiring and committed parent
…create family rituals that stand the test of time
…honor each family member while creating a strong family culture
…simplify and curate your home to make it a destination of choice
…craft a family mission statement
…design a Week of Wonders™ that keeps your priorities and dreams front and center

You’ll leave this workshop relaxed, energized and inspired to pursue your ideal family life.
It won’t happen overnight, so you’ll also get follow-up support and information to help you
implement your vision.

The thought of curating my home to make it a destination of choice was completely enthralling and so I entered their contest to win a free registration.  And then…I won!

I showed up harried and with a twinge of Mommy Guilt (what’s new?) for leaving my family on a Sunday to spend 3 hours finding ways to…create a better life for my family – there was something a little backwards about it, but I plowed ahead.  I’m glad that I did.  It’s so rare that moms get a chance to sit down and actively think about their day-to-day family lives and plan out future days to incorporate priorities and values that are important to them.

The workshop was full of mothers with young children (many of them with 3 kids!) and was 1 part relaxation and mediation and 2 parts self-reflection and action planning.  We started out by visualizing our ideal family day, identified how we spend our time, and explored the values and priorities that we want to instill in our families through our actions.  After a series of written exercises, we wrapped up by describing challenges that we face at home and challenges that we face personally.  The afternoon culminated in us crafting a mission statement for our families.

I loved that the workshop was practical and action-oriented.  By the end of the class, we each had a completed packet to take home with us, replete with shopping lists, a Week of Wonders activity plan, and a personal to do list.  So often as moms we are so busy just trying to make it through the day to day, that we don’t have the time or energy to make sure that our everyday actions are contributing to shaping our families to be fulfilled and enriched.

Some of the values and priorities that I identified as ones that I want to spend time cultivating with my kids are:

  • Appreciation for the Arts
  • Being Active
  • Learning Foreign Languages (including my native French and my sister’s ASL)
  • Developing a Love for Reading
  • Giving Back

These are all things that I think of often and “wish” that I had the time to implement.  But who ever has the time or the guidance?  Thanks to Patricia, I was able to translate each of these priorities into specific activities and a plan to put into action with my kiddos.  I can’t wait!

If you live in the DC Metro area, I highly recommend you taking Patricia’s workshop. Here’s to making tomorrow a Good + Happy Day!
