When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade…Provided You Have Clean Water.

I’ve really been enjoying this summer.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, we don’t have a big trip planned that becomes the focal point of the summer; instead we’re doing smaller, fun, relaxing things weekly that have made for a great couple of months.  We’ve been bike riding, paddle boating, playing tennis, to the waterpark, to festivals, and more.  We had loose plans to take a weekend trip to visit Luray Caverns with my cousin-in-law and her family and last week seemed the right time to do it.  I quickly found and booked our cabin online and didn’t think much else about the trip – after all, it was 2 days, 2 hours away: what possible planning could we need other than a place to sleep?  I’ve been so slammed with Blogalicious prep that I welcomed the opportunity to not go into my usual hyper-planning mode where I coordinate every aspect of the trip.

That’ll learn me.

I was at a meeting until 2pm on the Friday we were supposed to leave and then came home and had to jump on conference calls; that, combined with the fact that Hubby was working (from home), meant that we didn’t even think about packing anything until approximately 5pm – at which point we ran around throwing random items into bags.  It dawned on me that we’d need food to eat/cook while at the cabin, so I packed a couple of coolers and planned a loose menu in my head of spaghetti dinner, eggs and sausage, turkey sandwiches and various snacks.

Then, at 6pm, just as we loaded up the car and started on our way, it started to pour rain. And I mean pour.  I knew what this meant for our roadtrip because DC traffic is already a nightmare – but Friday after work + summertime + rain = a hot mess.  To make matters worse, Hubby had his heart set on taking us to a drive-in movie nearby Luray, which started at 9pm, so we didn’t have much time to spare.

I hadn’t packed us ahead of time or checked the weather forecast or paid attention to the location/time/details about the drive-in movie and I was kicking myself for it already.

After pulling over one time for dinner when the downpour became severe, we actually made it to the movie on-time.  And, yay! They were showing Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, so the kids were over the moon.  But, boo! It was still a bit rainy, so we had to watch some of the movie with the windshield wipers on AND our seating conditions all crunched up in our luggage-cooler-packed car were dismal.  Most families parked backwards and opened up the backdoors of their minivans and SUVs to they could comfortably sit and see the movie; we couldn’t do that because of all of the stuff we had packed in (not to mention booster and carseats).  Had I thought about it, I would have packed folding chairs and sat outside the car…or maybe I wouldn’t have because it was RAINING.  Suffice it to say, I let the kids climb up front and take the passenger seat and I toughed it out in the back, contorted, among fishing poles, and watched the entire movie only being able to see the bottom 1/3 of the screen. Whatever, I had my gummy worms so I was all good.  Once the second movie started (oh! it’s a double header! who knew? how about everyone who bothered to check the website!) I switched places with the kiddos who promptly fell asleep and Hubby and I watched The Amazing Spiderman.

We met up with his cousins who were waiting for us outside of the movie and we made our way to the cabin.  It was definitely in the middle of nowhere, but it was cute!  Since it was after midnight, we got everyone situated and unpacked and hit the hay.  The next morning, we woke up excited at the prospect of the new day, even though…it was cold and rainy.  It hasn’t been cold or rainy all summer.  And of course we were inappropriately packed for the weather because I never bothered to check the forecast.

But wait! There’s more!

Hubby quickly discovered that there was a problem with the water: it was yellow and murky and smelled verrrry suspicious.  He is nothing if not a germophobic hypochindriac and immediately went into freak out mode running around taking water samples and announcing that we needed to check into a hotel (or motel, rather, since that middle-of-nowhere VA had to offer) and get a refund.  I was so bummed! I had envisioned a relaxing, weekend at the cabin, sipping Prosecco on the screened-in porch with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountain-skyline.

After letting the water run for over 30 minutes, it was clear (pun intended, ha ha), that we were in a pickle.  We made eggs and bacon without having to use water and washed our faces and brushed teeth with the bottled water that we had brought with us.  The majority of the adults (i.e. everyone except for me) wanted to head to Luray Caverns and then head home.

I was not having it.

I may or may not have thrown a mini-tantrum expressing my disgust at people’s unwillingness to be flexible or think creatively.  We were not going to let the water situation ruin our mountain weekend.  I (passive-aggressively) convinced the group to stick it out and that we could heat up bottled water on the stove to bathe the kids and, for Pete’s sake, we adults could actually not bathe for another day.  After having a ball visiting the Caverns – another excursion for which we were poorly prepared and ended up buying over $150 worth of sweatshirts from the gift shop because we didn’t bother to read the website which alerted us to the 50 degree temps inside the Caverns – the rain let up and we did the Garden Maze and the Rope Course and then grabbed a bite to eat at a restaurant so we didn’t have to deal with cooking sans water at the cabin.

We bathed the kids using my strategy and made s’mores in the firepit. The adults stayed up and talked on the porch (I had my bubbly!) and guess what? The skeptical grownups even took “showers” the same way.  We woke up the next morning and packed up and hit a local mom and pop diner for a scrumptious Southern breakfast (think french toast and deep fried chicken).  Then! It was time for a hike:

All in all, the trip turned out great – we had fun, the kids had a BLAST, we got to experience the Shenandoah Valley and unplug for 48 hours.  I’m so glad I badgered everyone into staying the 2nd night as planned – it all worked out in the end.

And next time? I’m back in event planner mode.

I’m a ‘Best Brand of 2012′: Thanks @StilettoWoman!

Just when I’m feeling crazed and overworked, the universe always sends me a sign that all of my gray hairs aren’t for naught.  Tuesday night, just before heading to bed, I got a ping on Twitter that Justice Fergie Lifestyle Media had been named….

Imagine me, being recognized alongside giants like Marie Forleo and Young House Love!

As I sit here trying to draft coherent sponsor agreements whilst instructing kids to cleanup chewed apples from the dining room chairs, it’s nice to know that someone, somewhere thinks that my work is awesome.  Thanks KL, for all that YOU do for us women in business!

#FergiesTideCoolOff: An Afternoon of Ladies, Lunch, Laundry-Talk and Laughs

Summer Ladies Luncheon 2012 was a success!

Last weekend, I hosted 25 of my closest girlfriends for my annual summer shindig – an event conceived in 2010 when I realized that entire seasons were passing without my friends and I taking time to stop and enjoy each other’s company or have minute to ourselves.  Between our work-a-holic and supermama personalities, not a moment was left during the summer to sloooow down, put on a pretty dress and have a good laugh with the girls.  I decided to change that.

This year’s event was extra special thanks to Tide Coldwater who sponsored the Luncheon.  I usually use my Ladies Luncheon as an excuse to try out all of the recipes that I collect, but I graciously welcomed the opportunity to move the event from my cozy patio to the lovely Seasons 52 Fresh Grill.

I decorated our private dining room with fresh gardenias in the bright blue water bottles provided by Tide Coldwater and displayed handy dandy facts about the product in silver frames down the middle of the table.  Delightfully smelling favors from Lush Cosmetics, wrapped in brightly colored scarves were a nice touch (and, apparently, a nice surprise!).

At the last minute, I decided to invite a henna tattoo artist to glam the ladies up and I’m so glad that I did! It made for a fun afternoon of great food and conversation.

The conversation bounced from summer plans to reality TV (of course) to childbirth stories (naturally) to business ventures to heartthrobs.  Right before we dug into dessert, I shared some facts about Tide Coldwater and was pleasantly surprised to learn that several of my friends were already hip to the game! The ones who weren’t were intrigued at the promise of saving money and conserving energy, and were looking forward to giving it a try.

Judging by the excited texts and touching thank you notes I’ve been receiving, a great time was had by all…I’m already plotting next year’s!

This is the final post in a 3-part series sponsored by Tide Coldwater.  A huge thanks to Tide for making this fabulous event possible!

Do You Mastermind?

I am a big believer that “2 heads are better than 1″ and that collaborating with the right folks can be a life changer.  Now that I am a full-time entrepreneur, now more than ever do I look towards innovators, experts and trailblazers in my industry – or complementary fields – for inspiration and constructive feedback.  The truth is, “it takes a village.”  Too many cliches already?

Listen to some of the most successful business owners out there and they will almost always tell you that they had an amazing mentor or peer group that impacted their career trajectory in a major way.  I’m only in the very early stages of my empire-building game and  I am extremely thankful for key people that have served as mentors to me thus far – receiving guidance or perspective from someone on the outside looking in is wonderfully helpful when trying to make a tough decision.

So when I recently was invited by a local entrepreneur to be part of the founding circle of a Mastermind Group, I was excited at the opportunity.  Being an entrepreneur can be tremendously isolating (think: late nights alone with a laptop!) and being that I’m a social person by nature, the idea of a group like this is so appealing.

So What IS a Mastermind Group?

At its core, it’s a peer group where individuals can come together to brainstorm, provide support, push one another towards established goals and hold each other accountable.

A Few Guidelines

When starting up a group of this sort, it’s so important that a few basic ground rules are adhered to for increased chances for success:

  • the members should share a similar interest, skill and success level
  • the members should have a similar level of ambition and drive (no dead weight here!)
  • the members should be serious about lending support and receiving it where needed
  • there should no more than 8 members
  • there should be a “leader”
  • there should be a purpose statements and operating guidelines…in writing

2 Great Resources I’ve Seen

  1. The Success Alliance.  Provides resources to help you start your own mastermind group and also allows you to find and connect with an existing one.
  2. Inc.com’s 10 Rules for Modern Mastermind Groups.  Gives a brief history of the origination of mastermind groups and shares 10 clear strategies to get started.

If you have experience with a mastermind group, I’d love to hear about it!

10 Things That Make Me Happy: Stacey Edition {#my10things}

Sunday night I found myself watching “10 Things That Make Me Happy” on BravoTV.  Celebs Kyle Richards and Jonathan Adler gave us a glimpse into their worlds and shared the items that make them happiest and the stories behind them.

FWIW, Jonathan Adler and I have our love for the following in common: (1)  GAP 1969 jeans.  His, white; Mine, skinny; and (2) the Nook eReader.

In case you were wondering, Kyle Richards and I have nothing in common.  Well unless you count except my love for her Chanel bags.

Given that the Internet is a vanityfest, I thought why not share 10 things that make ME happy (in no particular order) – surely someone will care.

1. Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub.

I actually look forward to washing my face with this every morning.  It smells great and makes me feel like I’m doing something for my skin.  Every time I stray away from this product, I end up regretting it and coming back.

2. My Engagement Ring

I’ve been wearing it for almost 10 years and I love it every time I look at it.  It reminds me of that giddy feeling I felt when my Hubby gave it to me.  I also love it’s strong simplicity and the reminder that Hubby selected it all on his own. Just for me. It was also a stroke of genius on his part: anytime I get frustrated with him, I look down at my hand.  My very own platinum handcuff.

3. My Mayor’s Gold Hoops

Only in recent years have I really jumped on the fashion jewelry and accessories bandwagon – for years the only 2 pieces I wore were my gold hoops and my gold watch that my dad gave me.  The hoops were a gift from a family friend and they are so light, so classic, so me.  They go with everything and add that touch of subdued shine that works with any ensemble.  I once misplaced them, about 2 years ago, and I actually was depressed for about a week before I found them in a pocket of my jeans.  I love those hoops!  {This pic is of the white gold version – I couldn’t find the yellow version like mine online}

4. Skinny Cow Vanilla Caramel Cones

I will never tire of ice cream.  When I’m up late working or in need of an end-of-day treat, ice cream always does the trick.  And these Skinny Cow ice cream cones are the truth! They taste like a Drumstick, but with half the cals.

5. My Henri Bendel Handbag

Summer before last, Hubby and I went to LA for a friend’s wedding and, because it just so happened to be my birthday weekend, we made a pit stop at the Beverly Center where I fell in love with a Henri Bendel handbag.  And it became mine.  I love that it has a little bit of rocker chic to it with the haardware and zippers but it is classic enough to wear wherever.

6. My MacBook Pro

This one likely needs no explanation.  Two years ago I made the switch from PC to Mac and I’ve never looked back.  It’s sleek, lightweight, boots up super fast, I don’t have to worry about viruses, and it has backlighting.  My only beef is that it’s been freezing up on me lately, but still, my MacBook has been good to me. A blogger’s delight.

7.  My Blog

I love my blog.  The lovely Jo-Lynne Shane designed it for me in 2010 when I decided to re-brand from my FOODe blog to Life IS the Party.  She totally got my vibe and I am still so happy with it 2 years later (which is no easy feat for my fast-paced brain).  It’s not the mack daddy of blog designs, I know, but it suits me perfectly.  I love the simplicity and the white space with the pops of color.  And the gumdrops. How could I forget the gumdrops?

8.  My Southern Living Magazine Subscription

I’ve always had a penchant for all things Southern.  Which is curious given the fact that I am Canadian-born and raised.  I became a die-hard fan of the magazine some years ago and almost died when I was featured it in its pages back in 2009!  I so look forward to my monthly delivery of the magazine so I can devour the recipes, features on Southern business owners, and home and garden inspiration.  Even my kids know not to mess with Mama’s SL mags!

9. My Stella and Dot Jewelry

This company is the reason that I went from wearing only gold hoops and a gold watch (see item #3 above) to actually rocking accessories on the regular.  Almost every single piece in their collections appeal to me and I love the colors, delicate-ness and blingy-ness (Im hurting myself with the grammar here) of their jewelry.  For some reason I’ve yet to host a S&D jewelry party though – maybe one of these days.  Last year, Hubby bought me this necklace as a reward for my hard work on Blogalicious 2011.  Love that guy. And the necklace.

10. My Coffee Mugs

Nothing says relaxation more to me than enjoying a steaming cup of tea and some quiet time (preferably with the latest issue of Southern Living magazine, see item #8, above).  My pretty selection of coffee mugs adds to the experience.  I’ve collected them over the years without even realizing it: some are blogger swag, others are gifts from friends and family.  In fact, I’ve been thinking of starting a collection of something – I think I might already be on my way!
